GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 8th. March, 1917.

I have the honour to recommend that a bonus of

£75 be granted to Commander C. W. Beckwith, Acting Harbour Master, for work done by him during 1916.

Since the death, in August last year, of Lieutenant Davey Commander Beckwith has been managing the Harbour Department single handed, and I may add to the satisfaction of all concerned. Moreover he has in addition done valuable work in desl-

-ing with the purchase and distribution of coal by the Government for its own purposes, a matter outside his departmental work. I trust therefore you will see your way to sanction this bonus as a recognition of the good services rendered by him.

2.

Commder Beckwith has asked for the assistance of Mr. E. Jones, who at the date of his retirement was acting as Assistant Harbour Master fram July nert for the duration of the war. Commander Beckwith feels the strain of the work he is now doing too much for him and as Mr. Jones has had wide experience of this Port his assistance would be of great value to the Harbour Master.

I have therefore to ask your approval of the proposed arrangement and if it is approved I shall be obliged if you will communicate direct with Mr. Jones on the subject. His address

RIGHT HONOURABLE
